Maceo Plex – Conjure One EP
Label: Ellum Audio | Release Date: March 17, 2014
Beatport
After much anticipation, Maceo Plex’s Conjure One EP is finally available in full on Beatport, via his own label imprint, Ellum Audio. The Barcelona-via-Dallas producer has been known by other stage names in the past, but as Maceo Plex, he delivers only the utmost quality underground house feels. Conjure One is exactly the opposite of bubblegum, chart-topping house that’s hard to escape from, and is even different than the increasingly-popular deep/ future house some listeners are reverting to. It’s darker, weirder, surprisingly soulful, and completely enrapturing.
“I’m moving back towards darker stuff. I was never a proper house-head, I was into techno and electro. Lately, house has been overdone, it’s reached a commercial peak,” Maceo said in his late 2013 Mixmag cover interview. ” I’ve got to get back to what I used to do. People want to hear something a bit tougher, jackin’ and funky again.” With the punchy “Drama”, spacey “Bass”, and old-school “Balearia” (an homage to the 90’s style of electronica beats in Ibiza, of the Balearic islands), these “Conjure” tracks exemplify just that – toughness with a funky edge. After putting out so many delicious tunes on Ellum and touring like crazy, it’s refreshing to hear something new from Maceo Plex, and even sooner than we expected.
