The estates of several famous musicians such as Tupac and Tom Petty recently received horrible news that some of their original master recordings were destroyed in a warehouse fire owned by Universal Music Group dating back to 2008. The label was contractually obligated to be responsible for protecting the material. As a result, the label has now been hit with a hefty class-action lawsuit representing the estates and many more artists affected by the now infamous UMG fire.
The New York Times uncovered the story of the 2008 UMG fire in the article titled The Day the Music Burned. As more light is shed on the disaster, we are learning artists from all kinds of genres lost their original master recordings. According to the report,
“it is not possible to assert definitively which masters were burned in the fire, nor can it be said categorically that all of these artists did in fact lose masters. It also cannot be determined exactly how many of the destroyed masters were primary-source originals. What can be said with certainty is that these are artists whose material UMG believed had been lost in the fire and whose recordings the company spent tens of millions of dollars trying to replace.”
