Billy McFarland has announced that he has secured funding for Fyre Festival 2.0, and… a Broadway musical could be in the works.
The disgraced founder of the infamous 2017 Fyre Festival released this news via a TikTok video. Unsurprisingly, reactions were less than enthused. Some of the top comments are as follows:
“I just booked my ticket on the Titanic 2 to get there!!”
“Please, alert me for Fyre Festival 1.6 where we all go into the NYC sewer and listen to Blink 143 and Bayonce.”
“imagine getting scammed for frye [sic] festival twice”
Fyre Festival was a music festival that was scheduled to take place in the Bahamas in April 2017. The festival was promoted as a luxury event with top-tier musical acts, gourmet food and luxurious accommodations. However, when festival-goers arrived—after paying up to $100,000—they found the festival was not what they had been promised. They instead were offered cold cheese sandwiches and half-built accommodations, not to mention no sign of any artists. When many festival-goers tried to leave the island, they ended up stuck at the airport. All in all, it was a complete disaster and the entire scandal was documented by both Netflix (‘FYRE‘) and Hulu (‘FYRE FRAUD‘).
McFarland was sentenced to six years after pleading guilty to fraud and ordered to repay $26 million to investors. He was released from prison early just over a year ago after serving over four years. It is unclear whether or not McFarland will be able to contribute any money to Fyre Festival 2.0.
Fyre Returning
Last month, McFarland made a similar announcement on Twitter: “Fyre Festival II is finally happening. Tell me why you should be invited.”
The Fyre Festival founder has not released any details about this next event but has shared it will be on an island, though not the Bahamas. According to McFarland, artists have run the gamut of reactions from declining to even talk to him or reaching out asking out they can get involved.
As for that musical? “Instead of like traditional Broadway actors, it’s going to be current music artists, combined with the Broadway format of the play — making fun of me, but also I think sharing some of the good sides as well,” McFarland said.
Only time will tell if Fyre Festival 2.0 will be a success. However, the lack of transparency about its funding is a major concern. Potential festival-goers should be wary when buying tickets.
