Legendary melodic house and techno band RUFUS DU SOL are on Triple J‘s “Like A Version” YouTube channel with their new cover of ‘Something In The Way‘ by popular rock band, Nirvana. The video consist of the trio accompanying a group of violinist in a recording room. Together, they play the notes of the classic rock song and sing Kurt Cobain‘s famous lyrics.
In the mix, RUFUS DU SOL add their own taste by adding new drums, a new dance arrangement, and vocal chops. In the beginning, they transformed the guitar intro into a beautiful piano. Then, one of the members of the band imitates Kurt’s soft and raspy voice perfectly to go along with the transcending instrumentation build. After building momentum and adding a arp, the cover drops into a melodic house drop. The main elements of the drop is a bouncy synth that feeds off of the lead vocals continuing to sing the chorus at the end of the phrases.
After the first drop the cover spotlights the violin section and introduces a vocal chop for a bridge like section. Then the band brings back the verse for another monumental build into a another RUFUS style drop. All together, the band performed a near perfect dance version of Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’.
Behind ‘Something In The Way’ cover
RUFUS DU SOL talks about their experience and the reason why they recorded the cover of Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’. It is also on YouTube like the original video of the cover. One of the members of the trio, James shares this:
“In my childhood, this band was everywhere. This record that it’s from, ‘Nevermind’ was everywhere. And not only that, but I think this song has such a raw emotionality to It’s very naked and vulnerable, and that felt really interesting for us to rip apart and explore and see how we could put our own sort of electronic spin on it.”

Another member of the band, Tyrone, also the singer on the cover, says this about introducing live instruments and the string section:
“Hearing live strings was such a cool experience for us because we’re used to working with soft synths and trying to make soft synths sound real. And there’s just nothing really compared to having a live instrument.”

It has been a big goal for RUFUS DU SOL to come back to Australia to play their Surrender tour and return to Triple J for another “Like A Version” since their last one of Foal‘s ‘My Number‘ and Booka Shade’s ‘Charlotte‘ in 2014. Jon from the group says it so in the interview below:
“We’ve been looking forward to coming back to Australia for a few years now. And dreaming about these shows that we’re playing at the moment and being a part of being back in the triple j studios. I remember we set the goal of wanting to do a Like A Version almost two years ago now on our return and it’s great to see that through.”
