And the Billboard award for top dance/electronic artist went to … The Chainsmokers.
The dance music band comprised of Alex Pall and Drew Taggart had a big night on Wednesday, winning the Billboard Music Awards recognition over the late Avicii, DJ Snake, Illenium, and Marshmello.Â
Pall and Taggart have not broken their social media silence to comment on their award. The duo went on hiatus from Instagram, Twitter and Facebook on February 24 to focus on #TCS4, which means The Chainsmokers 4, their fourth studio album in the works. Released in December 2019, their third studio album World War Joy included big collaborations including ‘Takeaway’ with ILLENIUM, ‘Family’ with Kygo, ‘Call You Mine’ with Bebe Rexha, and ‘P.S. I Hope You’re Happy’ with blink-182.
Though The Chainsmokers won top artist, they did not sweep in all three dance/electronic categories. World War Joy lost the top dance/electronic album award to Marshmello: Fortnite Extended Set. The other nominees in the category were Avicii’s posthumous album TIM, ILLENIUM’s third studio album Ascend, and Alan Walker’s debut studio album Different World.Â
Neither The Chainsmokers nor Avicii were nominated for top dance/electronic song. That award went to Diplo, Ellie Goulding and Swae Lee for ‘Close To Me.’ In the running were ILLENIUM and Jon Bellion’s ‘Good Things Fall Apart,’ Marshmello and Chvrches’ ‘Here With Me,’ Kygo and Whitney Houston’s ‘Higher Love,’ and Black Eyed Peas and J Balvin’s ‘Ritmo (Bad Boys For Life).’
Marshmello and Diplo shared Billboard Music Awards’ respective congratulatory tweets.Â
Avicii’s Awards
Although Avicii did not win, TIM reached No. 1 on Billboard’s top dance/electronic albums chart in June 2019, just two weeks after its release. The album, completed by producers close to him, was Tim Bergling’s third LP to climb to the top, after True and Stories. TIM won best album from the International Dance Music Awards in April.Â
