Everybody is talking about Swedish House Mafia. Since their epic surprise gig during Ultra Miami 2018, everyone started to speculate that the trio would keep throwing surprise shows all around the world. However instead of surprise acts, they started to throw surprise cancelations! And according to Gareth Emery’s Instagram, Tomorrowland was one of them.
The word was out that SHM was supposed to be the closing act for Tomorrowland’s weekend 1 and 2, but just a week before the events took place, the full lineup was announced and another trio took that place: 3 Are Legend (Steve Aoki, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike). Much to the fans’ disappointment, everybody started to wonder why SHM wasn’t there, as even though they’d never confirmed they were performing at Tomorrowland, enough hints were saying they would be. Nobody had an official statement, nobody really knew what was going on. But Gareth Emery made it all clear in a just a few lines.
The post is very straightforward. Gareth freaked out over having to close out the Freedom Stage right after Armin van Buuren, and at the same time that Swedish House Mafia was scheduled to close the Main Stage… except that none of that happened. SHM canceled, and Gareth’s time slot was moved to sunset.
Swedish House Mafia: Divas or Perfectionists?
The reason for the cancelation is unclear. The most “plausible” rumor is that SHM requested three fire rings on the main stage, and Tomorrowland refused due to the the already too-complex main stage design. SHM wouldn’t perform without the rings, and Tomorrowland wouldn’t give in on that requirement either. The rest is history.
This is not the first time SHM cancels. Earlier this year, they also pulled out from Ultra Korea and the Weekend Festival, citing “unforeseen circumstances” and “production issues that couldn’t be fixed short on notice”. The result? Incensed fans, requesting their money back and starting to lose their love for the trio.
Whatever the reason is, we hope this can be solved soon. We are not ready to say goodbye to SHM.
