Samsung Reveals Galaxy A80 with First Rotating, Sliding Camera Design

Samsung has been busy these past couple months, attempting to create a device with the best full screen display. After our share of smartphones with various notch designs, it’s been a race to see who can successfully hide the front facing cameras. Recently, Samsung revealed the Infinity-O screen that featured a hole-punch camera on the front of the device. Many tech users favored this design over the controversial notch but it still competed with the screen.

Just this past Wednesday, Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy A80, a mid-range smartphone with a high-end feature. Surprisingly, the A80 does not incorporate the hole-punch or notch design.

Instead, it features a slide out, rotating camera. Yes, you read that correctly. The triple lens camera doubles as both the selfie camera and the main back facing camera. With a tap of a button, the camera can mechanically switch to face the front or rear of the device.

Currently, most people are liking the rotating, slider camera but some believe it’s just overcomplicated. Yes, it would be ideal to hide the camera underneath the front screen completely but also a complicated task even Apple has not achieved. We’re hoping that the moving parts of the camera are not prone to breaking, as the camera is arguably the most used feature on any smartphone.

Besides the interesting camera, the A80 packs a powerful octavos-core processor and 8GB of RAM. The cameras include a 48-megapixel primary lens along with an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens. Unfortunately, none of the cameras, including the 3D Depth sensor, will be capable of using 3D facial recognition but there will be a built in fingerprint sensor. Additionally, the smartphone will have 128GB of storage but no microSD slot or headphone jack.

We aren’t positive on exactly how much the device will cost in the US but we’re guessing at under $1,000. As announced, the Galaxy A80 will officially launch on May29th of this year. What are your thoughts on the A80 and are you liking the camera setup?
