Calling all EDM and heavy metal fans! A new study is out showing that YOU get the most lit at shows. Why are we telling you this? Research revealed that 62.2% of heavy metal fans get intoxicated at shows. This is a significant percentage gap compared to hip-hop concerts (58.7%), country music (46.6%), and pop culture enthusiasts (39.8%). What’s the reason, we wonder?
It comes as no surprise to that the “most likely to get intoxicated” award goes to EDM lovers. As part of the top three genres mentioned in studies, intoxication factors include alcohol, marijuana, MDMA, hallucinogens, cocaine, and opioids (except for benzodiazepines).
Drug use is definitely common among heavy metal and EDM fans, but fans in each respective genre have different reasons for the usage. Heavy metal fans say they use drugs to reduce social anxiety. EDM fans split between using drugs to increase the peace, love, unity, and respect for their friends and artists. The energy created allows them to enjoy the show more, or perhaps connect with the artist on stage.
With the acquisition and usage of MDMA being more common at EDM shows, it stands at 25.6% more than any of the other top genres dabbling with it. We won’t forget reggae and indie rock, though; they come in at 4.8% and 3.0%, respectively.
Take a look at the poll below for the results of the most intoxicated live music event genres below.
And here’s one for the most popular live music for alcohol and drug use.
While the survey only includes less than 1,000 people, you can still see the trend. Drugs and music can be an escape from reality. But let’s remember that it’s all fun and games until it isn’t. Stay safe, folks!
