Instagram is testing a new way to scroll through posts. Instead of swiping with our thumbs, Instagram will allow us to tap to advance to the next post.
This feature is currently how we navigate through Instagram stories. The company also confirmed to TechCrunch that it is testing the feature in its Explore page. As a company spokesperson told TechCrunch, “We’re always testing ways to improve the experience on Instagram and bring you closer to the people and things you love.”
The tap to advance feature was first seen used in Snapchat. It eliminates the need for users to make large swipes with their thumbs. This could reduce thumb fatigue, which does get tiring after long times of use.
Additionally, by allowing users to view the next post at a simple tab, IG will allow users to view more posts faster. It is also a good way for the company to gather more data on users. They can now gauge a person’s interest on a particular post by how long they spend on it before tapping to the next.
However, keep in mind that this is only in testing. Instagram did not say when they are going to implement this feature to the general public or if it will be implemented at all to the main IG feed. In the meantime, I guess we will have to try to use our phones less or succumb to thumb fatigue.
