What began as an underground movement following the demise of disco, electronic dance music has since catapulted into a 6 billion dollar industry. Now the genre featured on top charts regularly, and selling out festivals around the globe, has the attention of the entire world, but how did it get to this point?
What We Started a documentary from Bert Marcus & Cyrus Saidi aims to explain just that. Contrasting Carl Cox’s 30-year career, with Martin Garrix’s explosive rise to fame, the documentary includes interviews with heavy hitters such as Erick Morillo, Moby, David Guetta, Steve Angello, Afrojack, Paul Oakenfold, Seth Troxler, and Tiësto.Â
The film premiered Thursday, March 22 in Miami, and the red carpet was a family affair. Bert Marcus, Cyrus Saidi, Carl Cox, Martin Garrix, Paul Oakenfold and Paris Hilton were just a few of the stars in attendance. It was clear that the group of people who made this documentary were close friends, as hugs and smiles were in abundance that night.
Following the premiere, was an intimate Q&A with the directors, Cox, and Garrix in which attendees were able to see up close and personal, just how much emotion is behind the careers of all DJs and producers in the electronic dance music genre. In the words of Carl Cox, “it really is all about the music.”
