Berghain Is Now Famous For Something Other Than Its Music
Think you’re the biggest techno fan out there? 35-year-old DJ, artist and dancer, Isabel Lewis, may be a bigger one, having conjured up a scent that mimics that of Berghain. If you haven’t been to what is commonly known as Berlin’s most legendary nightclub, then you can now experience part of it without even being there.
Norwegian chemist ad artist, Sissel Tolaas, paired up with Lewis to take on the challenge of creating a practically-identical copy of Berghain’s aroma. What exactly triggered the process? Lewis wanted to engage with her audience on a deeper level; essentially, “bringing awareness back to your own sensory perception, and thus, your own body”. Lewis continues, “The strongest note is probably male body sweat, and it has these other notes of perfume, cologne, alcohol, burnt tobacco. It’s a very earthy, heavy, pungent smell. Pleasantness is not what we’re going for”.
While the concoction is not for purchase, this probably isn’t the scent that many would want wafting around them, anyway. We suggest hopping on a plane and experiencing Berghain in the flesh, anyway.
