Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff whose collaborations include 90’s hip hop hits ‘Summertime‘ and ‘Girls Ain’t Nothin But Trouble‘ have returned with an EDM track. The duo came together this past Sunday to debut their newest song ‘Get Lit‘.
The performance of ‘Get Lit’ took place in England at Blackpool’s Livewire Festival, but it failed to light any enthusiasm amongst EDM fans. Unfortunately, its unappealing musical structure, boring lyrics, and screeching synths paired with Smith’s lackluster performance failed to deliver.
Musical analysis aside the song had a positive message behind it as Will Smith stated:
“I wanted to make a song that allowed people to let their light shine. We all have an inner light and sometimes… people can say stuff to you and tell you you can’t. You know you can, but when they tell you that, it knocks you down a bit. I wanted to make a record that reminded each and every one of you to let your light shine.”
This was Smith’s and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s first collaboration since their 1998 song ‘Lovely Daze‘. Although for Will Smith, it has been 12 years since his last musical release. In 2005 he released his fourth studio album LP Lost and Found.
Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s musical comeback had been planned for a while. In 2015 they announced a return to music and attempted to go on tour last year which never happened. Smith also told Beats 1 host Zane Lowe that he has over 30 newly recorded songs which he plans on slowly releasing. From the impression that ‘Get Lit’ made let’s hope the rest of his music has a different sound. We’ll suggest you take a listen and watch a video of the performance below.
