The atrocities in Charlottesville have been the subject of many discussions on social media. Recently we have seen our favorite producers at each other’s throats over the subject. The problem is that they are essentially on the same side, they’re just arguing over how to go about the issue at hand. Earlier in the week, Jai Wolf tweeted about his white fans checking in on their minority friends to see how they were doing.
if you're white, ask your minority friends how they're doing and how you can be an ally. listening goes a long way.
— Jai Wolf (@JaiWolfx) August 16, 2017
An innocent request ended up being the spark of a debate between his fellow producers as Ghastly responded by asking all races to help by not generalizing the actions of one race.
If you're white, black, asian, hispanic, Icelandic, or human in general – ask how you can help, not generalizing one race goes a long way https://t.co/5zp5gEqOEt

Jai Wolf didn’t have any more to contribute, but his peers chimed in.
This isnt a "woke" thing its me being genuine I want to help fully – but being called the enemy simultaneously.. put urself in my shoes
— Ghastlys in Europe (@Ghastly) August 16, 2017
your rights aren't and have never been in trouble
— chet porter (@chetporter) August 16, 2017
Im not the victim, but blaming an entire race for the actions of few for a crime is not how we're going to progress into multiculture utopia
— Ghastlys in Europe (@Ghastly) August 16, 2017
Bro. If you're going to quote me, at least quote me right – that's very manipulative to just add quotes like I said that.
— Ghastlys in Europe (@Ghastly) August 16, 2017
Exactly what I'm saying brother, we all want the same thing and all of us as American people – all race aside – should fight back together
— Ghastlys in Europe (@Ghastly) August 16, 2017
cuz you're not picking a side by saying "let's all get along"

This discussion seemed to grab the attention of another “producer” in the cmmunity.
The diplo parody account made for Viceland’s “What Would Diplo Do?” made it’s opinions on the matter known by tweeting this:
dj's political tweets are always like
"yo maybe if we just had LOVE instead of HATE we could have world peace and solid vibes"
— Diplo (@_diplo_) August 16, 2017
It definitely seemed like a jab at Jauz’s previous tweet which brought on a response.
Fake Diplo's tweets are always like
"Something negative about DJ's or EDM that's funny and everyone can agree on! Watch my tv show!" https://t.co/VCU9q0CLiL
— JAUZ (@Jauzofficial) August 16, 2017
And yet another argument between people who seem to be on the same side.
you provide a lot of inspiration
— Diplo (@_diplo_) August 16, 2017
I'd rather hear it from wes to my face than from some 23 yr old intern , at least then it would feel real
— JAUZ (@Jauzofficial) August 16, 2017
i didnt mean musical inspiration lol, i meant dj behavior that everyone secretly laughs at inspiration
— Diplo (@_diplo_) August 16, 2017
For the record I knew exactly what u meant by inspiration
— JAUZ (@Jauzofficial) August 16, 2017
me: *generic edm cliche*
dj ive never heard of: "THAT IS SPECIFICALLY ABOUT ME!!!"
— Diplo (@_diplo_) August 16, 2017
No sense arguing with someone literally paid to make fun of us. Show's funny, but straight insults to a good dude are in poor taste.
— Tamagotchi Papi (@MUSTDIEmusic) August 16, 2017
If Sam is trying to do good on his terms, he should. Your jokes are funny, but the timing on this one is a lil hairy.
— Tamagotchi Papi (@MUSTDIEmusic) August 16, 2017
i dont follow him and didnt see those tweets until now. i tweet generic cliches, thinking those are specifically about you is a self own
— Diplo (@_diplo_) August 16, 2017
We all fit into your jokes because we all live the life of a DJ because we are all DJs. It's funny but everyone is touchy today. Me too. 🤘🏻
— Tamagotchi Papi (@MUSTDIEmusic) August 16, 2017
You're funny and jauz is a good dude doing his good. I'm drinking coffee and feeling flustered. Let's party? Idk put ur fukkn hands up 🤷🏻♂️
— Tamagotchi Papi (@MUSTDIEmusic) August 16, 2017
sounds fun but im a 23 year old intern. not sure if allowed
— Diplo (@_diplo_) August 16, 2017
This monumental argument doesn’t help the community at all. Everyone agrees that what happened in Charlottesville was disgusting, but the issue at hand seems to be how people are going about raising awareness. Producers took to Twitter with good intentions, but social media can only do so much in this type of situation. While it is extremely important for people with influence to speak out, especially with the influence that the Electronic music scene has in today’s culture, this example is pretty counterproductive. I agree that it’s a complicated matter, but bickering over social media doesn’t get our community anywhere. I will always recognize, support, and adore the producers/DJs that spread the message of spreading love, but it never has and never will be as simple as that. It’s a step in the right direction but it can only bring us so far. Consolidation will help leave a stronger impression, but it seems like we’re far from achieving that.
