Back in May, we reported that Space Ibiza‘s co-owner, Antonio Piacquadio, had intentions of reinventing New York City’s nightlife with a new nightclub called FREQ. FREQ was supposed to take over Pacha NYC‘s former building. Those plans might just have gone out the window with the latest reports of the building that once was home to Pacha NYC and Sound Factory.
Last week, Community Board 4 member, Morgan McLean, turned down the possibility of opening FREQ in the abandoned venue space at 618 W. 46th Street. The rejection was quickly followed by a second proposal made by Glenn Richardson. Richardson suggested that the venue should be turned into an art gallery with the possibility of hosting occasional acoustic music events on the weekends. The art gallery may become reality as early as this fall with the rest of the plan implemented in 2018.
Safe to say that New York’s EDM community is devastated by this news. However, on the bright side, it seems as if Space Ibiza may be making a comeback. With Electric Zoo just two weeks away, the festival has booked three after parties in the venue space where Space Ibiza stood. Only time can tell but the city that never sleeps could certainly use a new nightclub soon. Stay tuned as continue to report on the future of EDM in NYC.
