Johnny Depp is making headlines and unfortunately it’s not praise for his latest film. Today’s political climate is more toxic than any time in recent memory. There is currently a Republican Congressman and an aide recovering in the hospital from gunshots brought about by political hatred. It’s made even worse because often times the ones complaining about being fearful are the very same ones that are inciting violence. Case in point, the numerous celebrities who have used innuendo to hint at a physical attack or even an assassination of President Donald Trump.
The latest version of this same story just took place at Glastonbury festival in the UK, where actor Johnny Depp was there to introduce a screening of his upcoming film, The Libertine. While he was there he said “Can you bring Trump here?” to the crowd, drawing shouts from the crowd. He then said
“You misunderstand completely. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?”
While this comment could be construed as innocuous, he followed it up to remove all doubt by saying,
“I want to clarify, I’m not an actor. I lie for a living [but] it’s been a while. Maybe it’s about time.”
Realizing the gravity of what he had said he retorted “By the way, this is going to be in the press and it’ll be horrible. It’s just a question, I’m not insinuating anything.”
Nevertheless, his innuendo was heard loud and clear and Johnny Depp got his first headline unrelated to a bad movie in many years. Needless to say the internet backlash has been enormous.
I’m not a Trump fan, far from it in fact. But come on Johnny Depp, turn it in love. Not cool.

Just in case Johnny Depp does not know, the answer is 1865. The actor was a Democrat. What is it with Democrats and violence?#JohnnyDepp

Johnny Depp is the new HERO of #theresistance because he wants Trump to be murdered. So no SURPRISE they don’t care that he’s a wife beater. pic.twitter.com/CwDlMtQAwB

Sorry to burst your bubble, Johnny Depp, but if you wanna be John Wilkes Booth, you have to be able to get people into a theatre first.

In case you want the full context, you can watch the full clip above and judge for yourself. Did Johnny Depp go too far with a Congressman literally still recovering from an assassination attempt? Should he bear any responsibility if more violence does break out?
