The news that shook the world yesterday was the official announcement of the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather fight. After over a year of speculation, the fight that seemed to be impossible released their official date. The MMA-boxing crossover fight will take place on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas under boxing regulations.
Earlier this year, UFC President, Dana White, claimed that he highly doubted the fight would ever happen. With McGregor signed to the UFC, the fight would not be possible without White’s consent. However, after further consideration, White gave the fight chance and after successfully negotiating a deal with the Irishman, he closed the deal with Mayweather Promotions’ Leonard Ellerbe last week to make the fight official.
Floyd “Money” Mayweather is undoubtedly one of the greatest boxers of all time. With an untarnished record of 49-0, he seems to be the easy pick for this bout. Mayweather is coming out of retirement for his 50th professional fight against McGregor who has never professionally boxed before. However, “The Notorious” Conor McGregor has defied all odds to become the champion he is today. Over a year and a half ago, McGregor did the impossible and knocked-out the pound-for-pound #1 fighter in the UFC, Jose Aldo, in just a matter of 13 seconds to claim the Featherweight Championship. Since then, McGregor has been shattering records left and right including becoming the first-ever two weight-class world champion last November in his dominant victory over Eddie Alvarez. Mayweather, at the age of 40, will also be the much older competitor in this bout against a 28 year-old McGregor in his prime.
The biggest question now is will McGregor be able to touch Mayweather in the upcoming boxing match. McGregor has proven the power of his infamous left hand with 18 of his 21 career wins resulting from a knock-out. What would happen if McGregor gets lucky and lands one of his left hands?
Creamfields has announced that they will be screening the historic fight at the festival this year as the fight falls on one of their dates. It is set to be U.K.’s biggest screening of the fight. Currently the Vegas odds for the fight stands at -1100 Mayweather, +700 McGregor. Who do you think will come out victorious on August 26th? Let us know in the comments below!
