When most people think of MDMA, LSD, Marijuana, etc. they tend to think of their recreational uses. MDMA is an active component in “molly” and “ecstasy” which is how it has gotten a reputation as a rave/party drug. However, for over thirty years, scientists have been exploring the healing benefits of these drugs. Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) has been looking to MDMA as a medication in psychotherapy for PTSD, anxiety and more.  Through numerous studies they have found that consumption of pure MDMA is safe for humans, and this has opened the door for other studies to take place.
A joint study by the University of Auckland and the University of Otago just finished their first trials to see if MDMA could be used as a treatment for Tinnitus. Tinnitus is the “perception of noise or ringing in the ears” and affects 1 in every 5 people. There were enough people with Tinnitus that had taken MDMA and attested to the benefits they felt, so that this study was able to begin.
Participants were given 30mg, 70mg or a placebo pill. The amount given was too small to feel “high”, but many felt an alleviation in symptoms within a few hours, which were sustained for a week. While more research and funding is needed to continue with this possible treatment, MDMA might soon be proven as a cure for Tinnitus. This is an ironic twist of fate for those inexperienced ravers who risk getting tinnitus while taking MDMA at festivals.
