Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee has released their 2017 lineup. After last years record low ticket sales, losing the company $9.07 million, many fans of the festival had high hopes the company would come back with a stellar line up this year. Unfortunately, many are still left disappointed and in disagreement over this years headliners.
In the past two years, Live Nation acquired a majority stake in both the festival and one of its cofounders AC Entertainment. Since then the festival has received a lot of backlash regarding lineup, ticket prices and extra fees. Bonnaroo has been operating for 16 years, creating a long lasting community of annual attendees that love the original jam-band vibe and array of choices the festival offers. As electronic music infiltrates the mainstream more and more, many of these veterans feel less inclined to make Bonnaroo their top priority for summer music events.
While the lineup is full of the dominant electronic music superstars, like Flume, Marshmello, and Major Lazer, many have expressed that they are missing the level of musical discovery Bonnaroo has been known for since it’s conception. Is Bonnaroo pivoting to keep up with current music trends going to affect ticket sales again this year? We’ll have to wait and see.
