A 20-year-old woman who attended EDC Las Vegas was declared legally dead on Wednesday after being rushed to the hospital on Monday morning.
The attendee was in line for the shuttles at about 6 A.M. the morning after the festival when she suddenly collapsed and started convulsing. Her friends called 911, but because of the heavy exit traffic that music festivals are notorious for, it took about 10 minutes for the ambulances to get to her. By that time, her heart had stopped.
The woman was rushed to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced brain dead Wednesday night. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, doctors told the girl’s parents that she had died from heatstroke, dehydration, and exhaustion. However, the official cause of death will not be determined until the county coroner’s office launches a full investigation.
Prior to this, Insomniac and the police department had not released any reports on fatalities from the event. A few news articles covered the apparent lack of deaths at this year’s festival, which has seen at least one fatality a year since its move to Las Vegas.
Joseph Perez, a friend of the grieving family, told Fox5, “You read it in the paper that everything went well and that there were no deaths, but it’s not true. I’m mad. I’m very angry.”
Insomniac has since released a statement of its own since the news:
“We were shocked and saddened to learn that a young woman who had attended the festival passed away today, June 23, 2016. Our sincerest thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the woman. While the cause of the tragedy has not yet been determined, we ask everyone to keep her loved ones in their prayers during their time of grieving.”
