In 2015, we were lucky enough to see the rise of young artists like Jauz, NGHTMRE and marshmello. It may seem like these fresh faces, along with a plethora of others, ruled the world of electronic music, but we bet some of the more veteran groups would beg to differ. Along with a bunch of breakout producers, 2015 also saw the return of some legendary dance acts. Groups like The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and more returned to the stage and the studio to give their longtime fans what they’ve been craving for years: music.
It looks like 2016 is shaping up to be no different, as a few acts have broken their silence and announced new albums, performances and more. To get you excited, we’ve compiled a list of 7 comebacks to look forward to in the coming year.
Gorillaz
Ever since rumors of a comeback began circulating last year, people have been losing their minds over the possibility of new Gorillaz music. Thankfully for fans, co-creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have both confirmed they are working on new material. This would be the the first Gorillaz album since 2011’s The Fall.
MGMT
This indielectronica group hasn’t played a show on US soil since Coachella 2014, but it looks like this streak will be broken in 2016. It doesn’t stop at touring though, as MGMT tweeted that “2016 is the year MGMT re-dominates your mind hole” on Christmas Day. This might be one of the biggest comebacks of the year.
Pendulum
With Knife Party consuming most of Rob Swire & Gareth McGrillen’s time, we did not expect to see the triumphant return of Pendulum on the Ultra Music Festival lineup. The group will be performing live for the first time since 2011 and we can only hope this leads to another LP from the Australian drum and bass group.
Benga
After revealing his struggles with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, Benga was forced to step away from the world of electronic music. After taking some well-deserved time off, the dubstep pioneer is ready to get back into action and will be returning to the stage on February 12th.
LCD Soundsystem
In October of 2015, multiple outlets reported that there would be an LCD Soundsystem reunion in 2016. Those rumors were eventually shot down, but started to pick up again after the dance/rock group released a new Christmas song, marking its first release in roughly 5 years. Don’t be surprised if LCD Soundsystem drops an album and headlines some major music festivals (including Coachella).
Justice
On New Year’s Eve, Justice played one of the biggest parties in the US alongside Gesaffelstein and Bob Moses. This was one of the duo’s rare performances in 2015, which is most likely due to the fact that they have been working on a new full length album. According to a source, they have been “locked in the studio everyday”.
M83
Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming was one of the best albums of 2011, but ever since then, M83 has remained awfully quiet. That being said, the mastermind behind the band, Anthony Gonzalez, has revealed that the silence will end in 2016, as the French electronic group will be releasing an “epic” new album.
Did we miss any awesome comebacks? Let us know which return you’re looking forward to in the comments.
