In a world that constantly pushes to bring down the rave scene and write it off as dangerous and irresponsible, CNN host Lisa Ling offers a much-needed perspective on the culture.
The host of This is Life with Lisa Ling has also co-hosted ABC’s The View and OWN’s Our America with Lisa Ling, so it is safe to say that she knows what she is doing. In a recent biographical report, Ling reveals that she was “a 90’s rave-queen” who was as much of a raver as she was a dedicated student. Ling made it very clear that raving was a recreational outlet in an otherwise bustling life focused on schoolwork and several jobs.
As a young adult, Ling juggled several jobs and internships at many media outlets that led her to cover news in war zones about diverse global issues. Doing so made it possible for her to support her college career by herself as she attended a private university for three years.
Similar to many people who attend EDM festivals, Ling partook in the use of Ecstasy, claiming that, “When the drug kicked in, an incomparable feeling of joy overwhelmed my senses.” But although she does admit to rolling, Ling also warned, “What young people need to be aware of when they decide to take Molly or Ecstasy is that there are risks.” It is not uncommon nowadays for people to buy pills which they think are composed purely of MDMA, but actually turn out to be mixed with a number of other harmful drugs.
Nonetheless, the rave community is inherently comprised of welcoming, caring individuals. Ling states, “It is an environment that is very accepting and loving whether you are consuming MDMA or not.” Although having fun and feeling euphoric is often associated with EDM festivals, it is most important to note that safety should be everyone’s top priority. Drugs are dangerous, but the risk factor can definitely be lowered if people are properly educated on drug safety and are allowed access to drug testing kits.
