Over the past twelve months, the city of Toronto and the dance music community have not had the best relationship. Councillors banned electronic music events from city-owned property, beloved nightclub The Guvernment was sold to make room for a commercial-residential community and two attendees passed away at Veld Music Festival. With the deaths being attributed to the use of illegal substances, Toronto Crime Stoppers has responded with this entertaining, yet effective, public service announcement titled ‘Cookin With Molly’.
The PSA, which features a man who seems to be a cross between Walter White and Bobby Flay, is yet another reminder that while drug users may think they know exactly what they are taking, dangerous ingredients are often added to substances like Molly. The ‘cook’ is shown mixing bath salts, heroin and meth with MDMA and as humorous as the video may be, this has the potential to be a lethal combination. Detective Chris Scherk, the Crime Stoppers coordinator, states that:
This is in response to the summer rave tragedy where two young adults lost their lives as a result of consuming an unknown narcotic pill they likely believed was ecstasy, which is an MDMA compound and goes by a number of street names, the most common being Molly. Molly isn’t made by a pharmaceutical company. It’s made in basements, garages and on the streets. We are hoping that this video will resonate with youths and adults.  Truly, you don’t always know that what you are told is what you are given.
