Glitch hop has been gaining a lot of popularity over the past few years, and Mat Tha Hat does it like no other. His sound is a special blend of funky and euphoric vibes, and his new ep is a perfect example. The Charlston Whomp is a groovy compilation of tunes that incorporate all the basic glitch elements: choppy wubs, a swinging beat, and lots of energy.
“The Enchantment Under The Sea” starts off the set nice and easy in the build, with a music box melody and a vocal sample we are all familiar with. The middle two, featuring fellow UK producer re:flex, are both powerful tracks with massive sound. While “Fantazia” is more cinematic, “Steaming Mick Hucknall” is more based off its poppy synths and rhythms. The title and final track lives up to its name with an obvious jazz influence, creating a perfect mix of old and new styles. The Charlston Whomp is definitely an ep for any funk fan to add to their collection.
