Do you remember where you were when you first heard Krewella? I was sitting in my dorm room waiting for Knife Party to come in to the turntable.com/anonfm room and everyone was getting impatient. “They said they were going on at 9!” I said to my friend. It was 9:15. “This is bullshit man, they’re never going on. Wait…wait there’s a new DJ coming on! It’s…a troll. Wtf is this?” We went back and forth trying to figure out what a ‘Krewella’ was. Ahh… that seems like so long ago. Whoever was in control of the computer that night put down one hell of a mix, which I soon learned was an everyday occurrence, highlighted by the killer remix of ‘Fire Hive (Fuck On Me mix)’ and the still not officially released ‘This Is Not The End’ with Pegboard Nerds. I left halfway through Knife Party’s set because of the intense amount of lag (thank you college servers!) and started looking into this new gem Krewella. I really haven’t been the same since. I started with Fire Hive, then Alive Pegboard Nerds remix, then Come and Get It, then Troll Mix volumes 1, 2 and 3.
Now these three kids from Chicago, the sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf and resident badass Kris “Rain Man” Trindl are tearing up the EDM scene with their ferocity and pure love of the game. And to celebrate 3 years of straight fucking shit up here’s a list of some of the reasons why if you haven’t heard of them by now, you’re totally missing out.
1. Get Wet
Let’s play a game. I’ll throw out a word, and you say the first thing that comes to your mind. Skrillex, cooking; Levels, overplayed; Krewella, Get Wet. Krewella has one simple motto, “making you wet, one song at a time” whether it’s just from hearing Troll Mix Vol. 3, or from straight raging. Out of all the DJs I know, no one interacts with the crowd quite like Krewella. When they’re out on the stage, they are jumping around headbanging, stage diving and challenging the crowd to go harder than them (if that’s remotely possible). Get wet, get soaked, if you’re in the crowd for Krewella you better be moving or be afraid that one of the sisters of meow will come into the crowd and personally beat you for not raging quite like them. But then again, who can? The whole goal of their music is to get wet or die tryin’.
2. They see me Trollin’, they Hatin’
Ahh yes, the troll. You know, that little creepy doll everyone had to have but no one wanted? Those. Well they’ve forever been re-immortalized through Krewella who has taken ‘troll’ to a whole new level. There’s #TrollTuesdays, Troll Mixes; you name it, they trolled it. If you somehow haven’t already, download the Troll Mixes from their Facebook and thank me later. There are so few DJs who interact with their fanbase as much as Krewella, it’s almost like they should have a cult following or something…
3. Kertified Krewlife
Did you know there are a lot of crazy people out there? Like a lot? And if you thought these three were part of that demographic, you clearly have never seen their fan base. Krewlife is the name for the real fans, those ride and die fans who are bad boys for life. The Krew rolls deep to Krewella shows and lets it be known that there is only one act that you must get wet for, and that is Krewella’s. They bring giant cut out faces of their idols, giant signs, get awesome tattoos or even better . They only requirement to be in the Krew? A love for Krewella. And a special taste for Jameson.
4. They grab life by the balls, then squeeze
Alright let’s play word association again. Lebron, flop; NSA, evil; Yasmine, balls. Yes Krewella’s Yasmine is known for her..err balls, and is not afraid to let everyone know. Such a simple gesture, but it runs deep to the core that is Krewella; grab life by the balls. If that’s not inspiration, I don’t know what is. Well, maybe
this just to show that Krewella will never sell out themselves or their fans. How can it be that just 3 kids from Chicago have made such an impact? Is it their musical roots that run deep from Incubus to Abba to the Doors? Is it their awe-inspiring music with spine-tingling lyrics? Or just their general attitude towards life of get wet or die tryin’? Whatever it is, it’s working, so here’s to three years of rocking out with your balls out, and to many many more.
