Even after mega-group Swedish House Mafia played the final leg of their “One Last Tour” at Ultra, it doesn’t seem like Size Matter’s head honcho Steve Angello has any plan of slowing down. Fresh off announcing his new side label ‘X’ and debuting his BBC Radio One Essential Mix, Steve was set on making his return to New York for Electric Daisy Carnival. Last time Steve came to New York, he brought his Size crew and performed in Central Park. After that he gave us an afterhours set that would be talked about for months later. This time, he was back to do it all again for the EDC after party.
An afterparty hosted by Steve Angello isn’t your typical party or show. Unlike many other DJ’s, Steve is known to change up his music to fit the after-hour vibe. He believes that after parties should have dirty, dark beats blasting through powerful sound systems after an all day festival like EDC. Angello made that known last time he did a New York after party and on his Twitter the week leading up to EDC. Having missed the last after party Angello hosted in the area, I was very excited to check it out this time around.
Steve Angello grabbed the mic and took the decks at 1:30 AM. After getting the crowd excited, he took the decks and began his second New York set of the day. He came out ready to party when he opened with ‘Work It’ by The New Iberican League. Once he got started, there was no stopping him. He continued to play tech house beats that got all of Pacha New York moving and grooving. He specifically got me dancing harder than I’ve danced all day at EDC when he dropped Mark Knight’s new single ‘Your Love’, along with Chocolate Puma’s new remix of ‘In Da Jungle’, and Prok & Fitch & Filty Rich’s Toolroom Records jam ‘Justified’.
Throughout the night, Steve continued mixing with a smile on his face with the support of other DJ’s like Sunnery James, Ryan Marciano, Hard Rock Sofa, and more. To Angello, this type of afterparty was the “proper” way to end a festival and I couldn’t agree more. After giving the fans at Citi Field his well-known big room electro bangers, he brought his Mesical Kid alter ego to Pacha for another unforgettable performance. Steve always says New York feels like home to him, and New York is glad that’s how he feels about our home.
I speak for most of New York when I say we can’t wait for Steve Angello to return!
