Oh boy the curse on 2016 festivals continues, and a scarily familiar character is involved yet again. You see, normally Spring Awakening in Chicago occurred at Soldier Field. However this year the Copa America Centenario international soccer tournament snagged the venue for the weekend, leaving Spring Awakening with a growth opportunity. The festival was set to move to Jackson Park, a bigger venue with more stages and carnival rides becoming possible.
However, a Parks District spokesperson is now telling Chicago Magazine that local groups had opposed the move and ultimately the approval was not granted. Now the festival is 2 months out and without a venue. What should really make this worrisome is that Spring Awakening is owned by React Presents which is, you guessed it, owned by SFX. In fact, the lineup for this festival leaked in bankruptcy filings several weeks ago. Spring Awakening took to Facebook to address rumors of a full cancellation and assure fans that something will be worked out. We can only hope Spring Awakening 2016 doesn’t join the ranks of TomorrowWorld and Stereosonic (also SFX owned) in the 2016 festival graveyard.
